Abingdon Muster Grounds Interpretive Center

The Muster Grounds in Abingdon is celebrated because, in 1780, the volunteer militia of the Battle of Kings Mountain started their march over the Appalachian Mountains here. The militia commander was Virginian Colonel William Campbell; the ensuing battle completely destroyed the left wing of Cornwallis' army, thus ensuring America's success in the fight for Independence.

The victory of the Frontiersmen who marched over the mountains is commemorated with the Overmountain Victory National Historic Trail. The northern trailhead is located in Abingdon, where the mountain men first mustered before beginning the 330-mile march. The Muster Grounds in Abingdon now includes an Interpretive Center (nearing completion) dedicated to revitalizing the rich history of the Overmountain Men.

The VADAR State Regent's Project 2010-2013 is the purchase of museum-quality display cases that will house various artifacts from this Revolutionary battle.
